Prenatal Vitamins

What's the deal with prenatal vitamins? Are there actually vitamins called prenatal vitamins are do you just take a multivitamin? For some reason, I was under the impression that it was folic acid and I bought that, but now I'm second guessing myself. I wish they just sold something called prenatal vitamins ... or do they and I'm just missing it? Holy ramble...can someone help me? I'm helpless when it comes to this stuff. LOL.

I can't swallow pills too well so I double up on childrens vitamins for now~until I get pregnant. I am still getting my 800mg of folic acid that way.

Re: Prenatal Vitamins

You should check with your doctor. He/she will make a recommendation for a vitamin based on your health/needs, ie. exercise and diet.

I am on a prescription prenatal.

Re: Prenatal Vitamins

actually, most of the other people I know that are planning on conceiving soon are on prescription prenatels. My pharmecist says that they have higher levels of certain vitamins then the over the counters. Not sure which ones though.

My insurance covers it, so its not a big deal.

Re: Prenatal Vitamins

Hmm....my OB/GYN didn't recommend prescription prenatals for me. Verrry interesting! Maybe I'll ask my regular doctor next time I go. In the meantime, off to Walmart/Target I go. Thanks ladies.

My Dr said that the over the conter ones are just as good as the prescription ones. The ones in Target are $4 for 100 pills

Re: Prenatal Vitamins

I bought my first set of prescription prenatals today, I had a bottle I bought from GNC a while ago and they have exactly the same ingrediants as the prescription but some of the doses are higher

I asked my doctor if there were any certain brand of prenatals that I should be taking and he said no, to just make sure the vitamins have 800 mcg of folic acid.
I'm taking Vitamin World prenatals.

You can never really start TOO early. It's good to prep your body. I'm taking them now and I'm TTC in August but my OB/GYN suggested I do it 6 mos prior.

Prenatals are essentially multivitamins, so yes, she's right. I'd switch to prenatals once you get pregnant though because they have higher dosages of important vitamins than the regular ones do.

Re: Prenatal Vitamins

Ok, I'm so not taking prenatals anymore. They made me SO sick! I think I either have to do prescriptions, take half the dosage, take Flinstones, or just not take them at all! Yack!

Re: Prenatal Vitamins

Matron mine were the same way but I found that if I took them right before I went to sleep that they either did not bother me or I just couldn't tell they were bothering me because I was asleep.
