Relocating question- looking for jobs

has anyone done this? How do you go about looking for a job when you don't live in the state yet? Are places willing to conduct phone interviews? Am i going to have to get my a$$ to VA to go on interviews?

This makes me very nervous. DH says we should both job hunt and if one moves down first before the other then thats ok. I don't want to be alone. We do have friends that i could probably stay with if we don't get an apartment right away... but its still a sorta frightening thing to go through.

Re: Relocating question- looking for jobs

i am relocating to NJ after the wedding...not as far as VA but still a pain in the a$$... what i did was scheduled 3 or so interviews on the same day...that way i minimized how many times i needed to go. also, i was very up front when i was there about not being able to come back in person for a 2nd interview...
you have to be a little nervy when people call and are interested, schedule the meetings around YOUR schedule! Good luck!

Re: Relocating question- looking for jobs

Job Hunting is a tax deduction go and make a mini vacation out of it.

We have moved alot. Ny-Florida, Florida-Texas and then back to Florida.

And it has always worked for me to schedule appointments with as many staffing offices as I can in the area in advance and to keep calling them even prior to the move to make sure they are looing out for you and know your interested. Also I would suggested starting a sunday only subscription to the local paper of your new area or checking it online.

Re: Relocating question- looking for jobs

I got a job in Manhattan while I lived in New Orleans, but I used headhunters. It's much easier to do--I came up here for 3 days and had about 6 interviews back to back--Worked out, though, got offers from all!!

Good luck!

Re: Relocating question- looking for jobs

I am going through the same thing because we are moving to Georgia over the summer....try to see if a local paper has a website that you could check, ask you friend to mail the local classifieds (or fax them) up to you. I used SIL address in GA and got many responses off of the job websites. Maybe a temp agency in the area can help you?

What do you do for a living?

DH and I agreed also that one of us may have to go down before the other one, but it would only be for a short while.

Good Luck!!!!

Re: Relocating question- looking for jobs

When I moved from NY to CA (i have subsequently moved back), I just looked at job listings on the internet sent out my resume with a cover letter explaining my situation. I had phone interviews and went to visit once before moving and I accepted a position a week before I actually moved.

Re: Relocating question- looking for jobs

When I moved from NY to Saint Louis, I researched the industry I wanted to work in, got tons of websites from the companies in the area and applied directly to the HR dept. Target companies and their HR department.

I tried to schedule my visits to Saint Louis around my interviews, I had one phone interview but the job I really wanted (and ended up getting), I got a call from them on Tuesday, booked a round trip flight for that Friday (left NY at 6am, interviewed at 10am and flew back at 6pm) I was in town for less than 10 hours.

I would agree to research employment agencies as well. They can be a great resource. It is harder to interview for jobs when you are out of town because they want you to be flexible.

Check local job boards too. Most companies will post on those as well, not just the big cost ones like Monster and HotJobs. Local newspaper often have online postings.

Re: Relocating question- looking for jobs

i just did the reverse of your move, from northern va to nyc. i just tried to schedule interviews for the same day so i had less trips to make. honestly though i didn't get that many calls, so i didn't have too much of a problem! and i didn't actually get a job til after i moved here. if you're at all interested in the federal gov't use the site usajobs.com. you can set up email notifications and stuff. good luck!!
