Would anyone suggest buying a 1 bedroom coop insead of a two?

FH and I havent decided which we want - we need to weigh the pros and cons of it. We dont want to raise our kids in a coop -

We originally were planning on getting a two bedroom - the ones we like though are so $$$ so we've started thinking about getting a one bedroom instead of a two - that way we have a smaller downpayment, a lower maintenance payment, and less of a mortgage to pay back - thus hopefully giving us more equity when we resell it to buy a house -

Does anyone live in a one bedroom coop? Is it comfortable - i just dont know if the second room is worth the benefits that we will gain from buying a one bedroom.

Re: Would anyone suggest buying a 1 bedroom coop insead of a two?

It really depends on the layout...

we have been in 2 BRs that are small and we desparately need the 2nd BR...

and in 2 BRs where we don't even go into it...

We are closing on a 1 BR on Friday - but its a huge 1 BR ...the entire top floor is the BR and bath...and others have made it into 2 BRs...

Re: Would anyone suggest buying a 1 bedroom coop insead of a two?

we were in the same sitiautiona d looked all over at 2 BR co-ops because we wanted the extra room.
In the end. it was WAAAAY more practical for us to get a 1 BR co-op, which is what we just purchased recently. Havent' moved in yet, so I can't tell you how comfortable it is. But I know financially, that it will be much less of a burden and when we have children, we'll be more motivated to move out because we wont' be as comfortable in a one BR

We are in a one bedroom co-op and we wanted the cheapest one there was, we fixed it up and just wanted to save for a house quicker. Of course the two bedrooms were nicer, but we didn't even want to layout the $ so after 3 years, we made a good profit and are moving shortly to a house. Good Luck!

I lived for a while in a Junior 4 (master bedroom and also a small room off the kitchen that can be used for a second bedroom). We used the small room as a den. Maybe that would be a happy medium??

If going into a 1 bedroom will get you there considerably faster do it. Try and find one that has large rooms so you can set them up as multipurpose. I had a little office area in my LR in our 1 bedroom coop. And dont forget the value of a garage for storage.

Thanks for the responses - I'm going to relay them back to FH - i;m really starting to think that a 1 bedroom is the more practical way - of course i would love extra space- but i also want to look at the coop as just a starter...

We have a junior 4 (really a 1 bed with the extra room). We made that into a Dining room area. We had the same thinking as you...we just wanted to stop throwing away rent and get equity but knew we wouldn't be here forever. We moved in about 6 months ago and it has been fine. More space would be nice but isn't that always the case! Good Luck
