YES!
We did lots of 'research' when buying our home.
After we found the house we liked, we used to drive by it all the time, check out the neighborhood, the people, how close it was to town, stores, work, etc...
It took us two years to find the neighborhood we both really loved, so take your time & stalk away!!!

I think if a house was rented next door to a college crowd, etc you would be able to see from the outside of the way it is kept.

As for neighbors, you never truly dont know who your neighbors are going to be no matter what the neighborhood is. I guess all you can hope for is that they dont keep their house trashy on the outside.

Your right, there is never a way to be 100% sure. You cant knock on doors and interview your future neighbors.

I wish there were more definite ways to check this, but like others say, it's hard to know for sure and you never know what could change down the road.

We're already looking out for the obvious things....checking to see if the neighbors upkeep their homes and property. That will afterall reflect on your house value too.

But to see if anything else seems out of place in the area....garbage nbt where it should be, etc. you can get a good feel that way.

Re: Did you do some 'research' on the neighbors before you bought your home??

You could probably check at the police station or the school district to ask about any registered sex offenders. We get the notices from the school district when someone moves into the district.

Also, our seller volunteered info about the neighborhood. Of course you have to decide how much to judge that, but she offered up that her children played with the kids next door, etc. More details than just saying the neigbors were nice.

Funny story - our neighbors were 'checking us out' after we moved in. Our major Jets Fan / Yankees fan neighbor saw our Massachusetts license plates and said to his wife 'Oh NO - they're Patriots & Red Sox Fans!!!' He told us this after we told them DH grew up in Queens and was a former Jets season ticket holder and big Yankee fan.

Re: Did you do some 'research' on the neighbors before you bought your home??

Gosh, I drove around the neighborhood a bunch of times but believe me it wasn't enough at least for the house I just sold in Selden. My neighbor ended up to be a creap that hate kids and if I just would have talked to the other neighbors I would have found this out. Don't want to post it all, but if you want to know more you can FM me.

My advice check out as much as you can!!!!
