Some Considerations for Outdoor Weddings
(That are not all about the weather!)
By: Ashlyn Rothenberg
Whether your ceremony backdrop is a setting sun or a starry sky, there are lots of ways to make guests more comfortable as they celebrate your nuptials with you in the great outdoors. There are some obvious considerations for outdoor weddings (including the season), but here are some out-of-the-box ideas for your fairy-tale forest, bohemian beach, or mountain top reception.
1. Think about what favor to give out!
I also always approve of favors that will actually see some use, that way you know you're not throwing money away. Maybe it is winter time? Do some personalized lip-balm! Or, packs of flower seeds are a great symbol for your growing love. You want to address the fact that you are outside – not hide it.
2. Prepare for the ceremony!
I am from Florida, and although the scenery is gorgeous, getting married outside from April to October means heat. (Alright, I guess heat is weather, but cut me some slack!) Don't pass up a beautiful summer garden if it's your dream – just think about accommodating! Print your programs on fans that guests can use to create their own breeze, or shade themselves from the sun. Or give out small paper parasols as people arrive to the ceremony. It's also courteous to give guests some preparation materials in their gift bag at the hotel – like a small tube of sunscreen or some mini water bottles. If you're getting married in winter (I can hardly imagine!), provide some cozy blankets for people's laps.
3. Remember lighting!
My mother's second wedding was outdoors in her backyard, and her fiance hung white Christmas lights all through the trees and over the dance floor. It had major potential to be cheesy (I'm a harsh judge) but turned out so lovely that it was all anyone was talking about. For a daytime wedding, your pictures will be great because you will have natural lighting, but remember that any candles in your centerpieces won't have the same glow. For an evening wedding, your pictures may be dark, so set up a homemade photo booth with plenty of light to make sure your guests can take some killer selfies.
4. Think about the hotel!
Hotels can have such great grounds for weddings - including well-manicured pool areas or private beaches. If you want a hotel with great outdoor space that can be used for your wedding, contact Kleinfeld Hotel Blocks with the city where you are getting married and let us know that this is important to you! We can suggest hotels that are known for it, or if you already have a beach or mountain top booked, let us find a hotel close enough so that your guests won't have an excuse to be late to the ceremony!
Let us know any of your tips and tricks!
